The trouble with wipes

These materials don’t break down in the sewer system like toilet paper, so they arrive at our plants jamming mechanisms, clogging pumps, and breaking critical machinery.
NYC Department of Environmental Protection, Trash It. Don't Flush It. Read 1 October 2026.

That is New York City's sewer department, writing about wipes sold as flushable. A wipe that clears your toilet can still snag in the pipes of your own building.

What changes when you rinse first

  • Water removes what paper smears. You need a few sheets to dry, not a handful to clean.
  • No perfume and no preservatives touch your skin. It is tap water.
  • Nothing extra goes down the drain.
  • The bottle stands by the toilet and takes ten seconds to fill.

Where a fitted bidet is the better buy

  • If squeezing a bottle is hard for your hands, a seat with a lever or button is easier.
  • If you own your home and want heated water on tap, a fitted seat does that and a bottle does not.
  • If several people share one bathroom, each needs a bottle. A seat serves everyone.

Other ways to use it

  • Travel: Hotels, flights and long drives without a bidet in sight.
  • After birth: A peri bottle for the weeks when paper is the last thing you want.
  • Camping and road trips: Clean hands, clean feet and a clean backside far from a bathroom.
  • Period days: A rinse with plain water, at home or in a public stall.
  • Sore or sensitive skin: When wiping is the part that hurts.
